FWIW, I just watched a video of the new Cayenne Turbo come within 1.2s of a 2011 C4S on a short track. Very impressive. I would boil my decision down to road = Cayenne, off-road = G-wagen. My buddy had a G55 and it was a bit much for day-to-day urban driving. I used to drive an armored one overseas, so I do appreciate the S-class level of amenities inside.
Does it matter who I'm talking to? This discussion was about a Cayenne vs a G-Class and then Hugo compares the G to the Jeep Cherokee? Not that there's anything wrong with the cherokee, but the comment was clearly incendiary as there is no "huge" technology gap between the Cayenne and the G - the G is geared towards offroad and the Cayenne towards sport. The comment, regardless who it was from, was unnecessary. The gap is really between purpose, not execution.

You asked for an opinion on an open forum and you got it.

You can't really compare the two, they are from 2 different eras. You can only choose what suits you better personally and I don't know what your taste or needs are.
Best way is to go drive the new Cayenne and see if you prefer it over the G-wagon.
I did not perceive it as slight sarcasm. Apparently there is a continental divide in technology between the two trucks, yet I don't see it? Is it because the Cayenne is more sport oriented, that makes it technologically more "advanced"? The G will never handle around a circuit like a Cayenne, it is not designed to. There is no way a Cayenne could keep up with a G at Moab either. The truth is, most Cayennes don't spend their life at the track and most Gs do not spend most of their time at Moab.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but hugo is stating it as matter-of-fact, not as "opinion". You did a very good job of stating an opinion. I respect the Cayenne, as I said in my original post... I would like to think most enthusiasts here could talk about other capable cars without false and incendiary comments... I mean if you are going to make a comment like that, make it funny... but maybe I expect too much.

The new Cayenne is a nice car and I'm sure you'll have a blast with it. But it's also the kind of car you'll turn in for the newer/hotter/better model in a heartbeat when it comes out eventually.

The G on the other hand is the kind of car you'd still want to have in the family 50 years from now.
Yes, she did drop me on my head. I don't like to talk about it.

Aside from that, your comments are spot on. While the G does have "status" associated with it, especially in the case of the 55, the hard core nature of it tends to ward off most status seekers who aren't up to dealing with the true personality of the truck. Kind of like why you don't see GT3RSs in Jay-Z videos.

Haha. You don't spend to much time on forums do you? I thought Hugo's comment was funny. Try not to take everyone here so seriously, you will enjoy it. And welcome to teamspeed.

Yes, it does. Know your audience (or in this case, who you're insulting). You're off to an inauspicious start in my opinion.

The G55 could rape the living out of the Cayenne!!

The new Cayenne is a pretty nice car, I really love the interior and all...nice gizmodoish and the exterior is wow, better than the older one that's for sure!

The G55 is a KING, it grows old and still looks the same ever since the world war.. It's a piece of icon and history...It should run in your blood as an AMG owner and you SHOULD not even consider of selling her!!

SHAME ON YOU!

Stick with it or get a newer G55!

not even a Cherokee,a Wrangler.....and know this-the Wrangler is even more suitable for off road duties on account of it's superior ground clearance compared to the G55 (thread title?) which fails miserably on that issue due to it's mid car side exhaust pipes...oh yes it does have the Wrangler's wipers
and the C class interior, instumentation,to each his own i guess

hugo,

It's obvious the G-class is not for you so I won't continue arguing. Removing the side tips is one of the easist mods to do a G-class and hardly precludes people from doing any offroading with it.

At the end of the day the Cayenne is a pedistrian SUV, and the G is a worldwide icon with acual heritage. The comments about cherokee/wrangler/whatever are your opinions, but I can tell you my '09 G's interior is between an E-Class and an ML/GL. I'm sure you don't care.

To the original poster - I think, in the end, the G either speaks to you or it doesn't. It seems that you did the right thing in buying one and how well the G matches your taste will ultimately win the day...

IMO(noted Marcus?) between the G55 AMG and the Cayenne turbo, the G55 is the vehicle that went pedstrianisation - why else send the agricultural and otherwise off road competent G500 to AMG?to be lowered, suspensioned and powered up to make it what? A pretending To be sporty G... AMG don't do off roaders, the G55 is a road car not an off roader,no height adjustment, tires are too wide, and those exhaust pipes, the new Cayenne turbo though is a super competent on and off road car produced as intended to be without the need of AMGing it,mind you I have had 5 55's and now have the new Cayenne turbo so the a/m opinion is based on personal experience, the 55 as charming as it is is totally outdated and out classed by the Cayenne turbo and in all fairness should not be compared
