Lightbulb Update : Aqua Blue Metallic 2010 GT3 Spy Shot

Porsche readies new GT3

07 January 2009
RATE:

Speculation surrounding the possibility of a new 997 GT3 reached new levels late last year when numerous websites published spyshots of almost completely undisguised cars tooling around Germany. That the car existed wasn’t the issue – what people couldn’t decide on was whether the car would be launched in 2009, whether it would offer a PDK transmission and if the old GT1 block would be retired in favour of a DFI unit.

Now DR has some speculative but well-informed answers to those questions. It now seems likely that Porsche will announce the new GT3 in late January, with UK deliveries beginning late summer. Interestingly, the Porsche GB website has this week removed the price of the old GT3 and RS and in their place simply has ‘production has ended’. Of course that happened nearly a year ago, but there must be some significance in the change to the site being made now.

Being Porsche, no one is even willing to discuss the existence of the car, let alone its specification, but a move to direct injection seems inevitable, as does the option of a PDK transmission. In the UK the uptake of PDK on the new 911 is currently running at 73-percent, proving the huge appetite for the flexibility of self-shifting and the speed of the twin-clutch system. Best of all, we know a development car has been spotted with two paddles behind the wheel, meaning the standard PDK arrangement might have been ditched for the GT3. Let’s hope a conventional paddle set-up is carried through into production.

The story doesn’t end there either. In a rather wonderful two-finger wave to the recession, Porsche are readying an GT3 RS too. In fact, most of the spy-shots have been of the RS, and despite all manner of conjecture, no one seems to have commented on the wheel design. Look closely and you’ll see that they feature centre-locking nuts straight from the Carrera GT and most Porsche racecars.

And if this isn’t enough in what most of us expected to be a barren year for exciting new sports cars, there’s a suggestion from factory sources that Porsche might be considering a mental, lightweight version of the 997 GT2. Now anyone who has experienced one of these things at warp eleven will struggle with the concept of a faster, lighter version, but we’re already forming a petition to be sent to Stuttgart.

With the revised Boxster and Cayman, the Panamera, perhaps three fast 911s (the revised Turbo should arrive soon too), Porsche seems intent on giving us all something to smile about in 2009.
