I know that 348s are regarded by some as a blemish on Ferrari's contemporary report card; an indelible stain on their heavenly slate upon which achievements have been chiseled. And I've never driven a 348, and I'm not, nor have I ever been, a Ferrari owner.
But I think the 348 is a great car. And if you believe it's not a good Ferrari, and you believe it's sacrilegious to enhance factory DNA - then what better Ferrari to modify than one you don't think is very good...?
I like the 348, I think it sounds awesome, and the last time I rode in one - a Spider - I was howling with the exhaust note, top down, as we flew down the 405 at 140mph.
Compared to the 355, the 348 is subpar - but that's evolution...! Compared to the 328, the 348 is better - but that's evolution...! Compared to the Testarossa, the 348 ...is a 348 - you can't compare apples to oranges...! I think the 348 has a rightful place in Ferrari's contemporary road car history - and without the proverbial asterisk or any other pejorative connotation.
