Below are some pics I took at the '04 Monterey Historics... this is one of the most important 550's in existence (550-04) - this car usually sits in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, but occasionally makes it out for historic rallies and events. The 550 Spyder took its name as it was the 550th design project by Porsche. The model debuted at the Paris Motor Show in Oct of 1953, and was specifically designed for racing purposes, powered by an air-cooled 1,500cc 4-cylinder engine producing 110 bhp at 7,800 rpm.
Hans Hermann drove this 550 to a class victory and 3rd-place overall finish in the Carrera Panamericana in 1954 (only bettered by 2 factory Ferrari's). Interestingly, this was the first Porsche to carry sponsor livery (Fletcher and Telefunken), and its racing success helped put Porsche on the map.
